Female charged for doing makeup while driving

A Guelph female observed doing her makeup while driving Sunday evening has been charged with careless driving.

Approximately 7:30 p.m., a Guelph Police Service officer was on patrol in the area of Wellington Street West near the Hanlon Expressway when he observed a speeding motor vehicle. The officer noted the female driver was brushing her hair and applying makeup and did not have any hands on the steering wheel.

The motor vehicle was pulled over. A 44-year-old Guelph female is charged with careless driving under the Highway Traffic Act.

Guelph female charged with arson in motel fire

A Guelph female has been charged with arson in connection with a fire last month which caused extensive damage to a north-end motel.

Approximately 4:45 a.m. May 27, Guelph Fire Department and Guelph Police Service personnel were called to a motel on Woodlawn Road West at Silvercreek Parkway North. A fire in a second-storey room caused extensive damage to several rooms and displaced more than two dozen guests. One person was taken to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Investigation, including assistance from the Office of the Fire Marshall, determined the fire was set on a bed.

A 49-year-old Guelph female has been charged with arson with disregard for human life. She will appear in a Guelph court October 5, 2021.

Male faces assault, confinement, impaired driving charges

A Guelph male faces several charges including assault and impaired driving following an incident Saturday evening.

Approximately 10:45 p.m. Saturday, Guelph Police Service officers were dispatched to a gas station in the city’s south end after an adult female came into the business saying she had been assaulted. The female indicated she had been downtown when she got into a verbal dispute with a male known to her.

The male, who had been consuming alcoholic beverages, began driving erratically and running red lights, cutting off several other motor vehicles. When the male came to a stop the female tried to leave, but the male grabbed her wrists and prevented her from leaving for approximately 10 minutes.

Officers located the male at a residence in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Wilsonview Avenue.

A 24-year-old Guelph male is charged with assault, forcible confinement, impaired operation and impaired operation – blood alcohol concentration. He was held for a bail hearing Monday.

The male’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days and his motor vehicle seized for seven days.

Shoplifter had shopping list of items to steal

A Guelph female who had an apparent shopping list of items to steal for other people faces several charges.

Last Friday, approximately 2:30 p.m., Guelph Police Service officers were called to a business on Eramosa Road near Stevenson Street North after a female left the store pushing a cart with more than $600 in stolen product.

As officers entered the parking lot, the female abandoned the cart and attempted to flee but was stopped and placed under arrest. During a search incident to arrest, police located a journal containing a list of items and names which appeared to suggest certain items were being stolen so they could be sold or traded to specific individuals.

The female was also in possession of identification and a credit card in other people’s names.

A 33-year-old Guelph female is charged with theft under $5,000, possessing stolen property under $5,000, attempting to traffic in stolen property and breach of probation. She was held for a bail hearing Monday

Wanted male arrested on more than a dozen charges

A Guelph male faces more than a dozen charges after he was arrested Friday on several outstanding warrants.

Just after 11 a.m. Friday, the male was spotted by members of the Guelph Police Service High Enforcement Action Team getting into a taxi in the area of Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue. The cab was stopped a short distance away and the male arrested.

He was wanted for breaking into a residential garage in the west end last month, as well as defrauding a taxi driver in February and failing to appear in a Guelph court in early May in relation to theft and escaping custody charges. When he was arrested Friday he was found to be unlawfully in possession of prescription pain pills.

A 27-year-old Guelph male faces more than a dozen charges including break and enter, trespass by night, possessing stolen property, escaping lawful custody, possessing a controlled substance and five counts of breaching probation.

He will appear in a Guelph court October 1, 2021.

Guelph Police investigating stabbing outside business

The Guelph Police Service continues to investigate a stabbing on the weekend outside a west-end business.

Approximately 2:25 a.m. Sunday, police received a 911 call indicating someone was bleeding from the head outside a business located near the intersection of Willow and Dawson roads.  Police determined the individual suffered a stab wound to the side of the head. An adult male was transported to Guelph General Hospital where he was treated and released.

Male breaches conditions within an hour, gets arrested again

A Guelph male spent the night in jail after he breached a release condition within an hour Tuesday night.

The Guelph Police Service was called to an apartment unit in the downtown area approximately 9 p.m. Tuesday. Investigation revealed a male had caused a disturbance and smashed a vacuum cleaner. The male was charged with mischief and released at approximately 9:30 p.m. on an undertaking with a condition not to attend the address.

Approximately one hour later, police were called back to the apartment after the male returned and began yelling. He was located on scene and arrested again.

A 29-year-old Guelph male is charged with mischief under $5,000 and failing to comply with an undertaking. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.

Thousands in tools stolen in break and enter

The Guelph Police Service is investigating after thousands of dollars in tools were stolen during a break and enter.

On Tuesday afternoon police attended a business near the intersection of Elmira Road North and Speedvale Avenue West, where the owner reported a storage container in the yard had been entered sometime over the weekend.

Several items were stolen including a Dewalt pressure washer, Stihl concrete saw, a cable compressor and two nail guns with a total estimated value of $2,350. The lock of the storage container had been cut off.

Second arrest made in 2020 gunpoint carjacking

A Peterborough male has been arrested in connection with a gunpoint carjacking in Guelph last fall.

On October 28, 2020, at approximately 12:30 a.m. the victim attended an address in the area of Edinburgh Road South and Water Street to meet with a male he had met through a social media platform.

When the victim arrived, one male got into the front passenger seat of his motor vehicle while a second male got into the back seat. Both males brandished handguns and demanded the victim drive to an ATM and empty his bank account. The victim offered the males $100 to set him free, but one of the males took the cash and punched the victim in the head.

The victim was able to alert a passerby and got out of the vehicle to avoid being further assaulted. The two males fled the area in the victim’s motor vehicle, which was later recovered abandoned in the city’s north end.

Investigation by Guelph Police Service officers led to the identity of the two males.

A Guelph male, who was 18 at the time, was located by Guelph Police Service officers three weeks after the incident and arrested for robbery with a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, theft of motor vehicle and possessing stolen property over $5,000. He spent more than a month in custody before being released on bail and will next appear in a Guelph court July 20, 2021.

A 22-year-old former Guelph male, who has since moved to Peterborough, was arrested Monday by Peel Regional Police on an outstanding warrant. He has been charged with the same offences and was held for a bail hearing in Guelph Tuesday.
